City Lights (1931)

Charlie Chaplin is one of the greatest comedians of all time. It’s not often that a comedian is able to transcend multiple generations and still have the same effect over eighty years later; however, Chaplin accomplishes just that. This film is one of the funniest I’ve ever seen. What makes the film even better is the fact that Chaplin is able to accomplish this level of comedy without any dialogue. Using music and acting, Chaplin (and almost Chaplin alone) is able to produce a film that exceeds any and all expectations one might have for a silent film. A film written and directed by the same person is a feat that not many can claim to have accomplished, yet Chaplin does this. On top of this, Chaplin stars in this film and is easily one of the best actors of his generation and of all time. Every character in this film did a fantastic job of playing their part and portraying exactly what it was that Chaplin expected of them. Virginia Cherrill’s “Blind Girl,” Harry Meyers’ “Eccentric Millionaire” and Hank Mann’s “Prizefighter” were particularly fantastic. While silent comedies aren’t everyone’s forte, I dare anyone to get through the boxing scene without laughing at least a little bit. If you’re a fan of comedy (in any regard), you have to check out this film at least once.  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021749/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
